No, my account has not been hacked. I am actually posting about beauty & wellness on Bake and Destroy, and it’s probably not the last time. If you noticed a decline in cupcake recipes in 2014 it wasn’t because I lost my love for sweets and treats. But after nearly dying in 2013, I spent this last year doing everything I could to heal my body and reclaim my healthy hair and skin.
Long story short, I was hospitalized with blood clots in my lungs in November of 2013. I spent about 8 months on a heavy dose of blood thinners, and now I am banned from taking any hormonal medications ( yep, including birth control – sucks). This drastic change in my health affected everything in my life – I gained weight, I chopped off all my dry, unhealthy hair, my skin went crazy… I spent most of 2014 making small changes here and there, experimenting with different holistic treatments for things, seeking out natural products that are safe for me to use.
I figured I’d start posting some of my DIY remedies, products picks and things of that sort here. There will still be recipes, of course, I promise that along with my favorite smoothies and juices you will still find cookies, cupcakes, tacos, and all the things that brought you here in the first place.
It’s a departure from the usual, so bear with me. My first post is going to be pretty personal – how I fought and won my battle against hormonal acne. Spoiler alert: I did it with all natural, vegan products that anyone can buy on the internet.

I’d love for you to do a review/recommendation on juicers! You always have such awesome looking juice recipes, but I don’t have a juicer or even know how to use one. So, recommendations for newbies to the juice world? Thanks!
Went off bc pills 2 years ago due to monster-like rage, and my skin decided to revolt. Every pore clogged overnight, dry patches appeared, oil slicks ensued. The consensus was that after a few months, everything would regulate (whatever the hell that means) and my smooth porcelain skin would return. Nada. I’ve been using Mario Badescu products, but they seem to do nothing for the forever-sporty, clogged mess that is my face. I’d love some vegan cures for my skin care blues. Can’t wait to read your post on hormonal acne solutions 😀
Forever-spotty, that is.
Tell us the cuuuuuure
For the last week, I’ve been trying the oil cleansing method to treat acne break outs, for some reason I suffer as a vegan adult what I never did as a fast food eating teenager. It’s too soon to see if it’s going to work for me. Have you tried that?
Would love to read about all natural hair care too.
Hormonal acne has been trying to destroy me for 7 months. I quit taking birth control and my hair started to fall out in clumps. I can get through this I thought. Then my skin went crazy. My hair stopped falling out but my skin just won’t give me a break.
I’d love to read what you have discovered! Just recently I’ve been having major sensitivity issues that I didn’t have before (just turned 40), like rash flare ups on my nose and cheeks .. that disappear in one night. I am researching gentler products as well. I’ll be reading!
I have insanely dry skin along with eczema but I hate using the steroid creams that doctors are quick to give out. Winter is brutal. I have used my great-grandma’s trick of rose water and glycerin on my hands at night and then sleeping with cotton gloves on and it helps. Any recommendations for a good plant-based glycerin and something to help the rest of my skin?
Stoked you are doing this. I have had trouble with breakouts forever, I look forward to reading what helped you.
