I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen friends post pictures of their frothy green smoothie only to be met with a barrage of “yuck” comments from a bunch of diaper babies. Listen, I know it looks like swamp water but do you really think we’d all be knocking them back every day if they were repugnant? The trick to a great green smoothie, in my opinion, is to offset the earthy, grassiness of the greens with bright, fresh flavors like citrus, pineapple and ginger.

I’ve come up with a beginner recipe that you can swap your favorite ingredients in and out of. If you’re new to the whole green smoothie thing, try mellow greens like baby spinach, bok choy or chard in place of the kale – or replace half the kale with one of those and work your way up to full kale action.

The people at  TeaGschwendner were nice enough to send me a care package containing their gorgeous organic Japan Matcha Green Tea Powder, which I added to my smoothie because of it’s high antioxidant levels and kick of energy (matcha green tea contains about half the amount of caffeine of a cup of coffee, but its released slowly so you don’t get jittery).
