Last week I received an assortment of Boyajian oils, which was pretty sweet considering their maple flavor is a staple in my Vegan Banana Bread French Toast Cupcakes. I got the citrus oil set, which is amazing for baking up really fresh-tasting creamcicle cupcakes and lime cookies, but I was most excited about the Fire Box which contained habanero, jalapeno, chipotle, wasabi oils.

Ring of Fire Brownies

I knew spicy brownies were in order, so I tapped my Black Metal Forest Brownies recipe, which can be found in my book, and did a little tweaking to create Vegan Ring of Fire Brownies. These brownies are molten in the center if you eat them while they’re still warm, then they cool to a perfectly chewy confection – in this case with just enough kick to leave your belly felling warm and happy. Tony was scared to try these, so his mom and I ate the whole pan by ourselves.

Serve with coconut whipped cream for extra deliciousness!

I already had a cakey brownie recipe for my book and wanted to offer something fudgy as well. The base for this recipe was generously given to me by my friend Melisser, author of The Vegan Girl's Guide to Life.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt together in a small bowl. Stir in the ground flax seeds. In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, oil, water, vanilla & habanero oil.
  2. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet, the batter will be thick. Fold in the chocolate chips and scoop into a 9 x 9” pan lined with parchment paper or lightly greased.
  3. Bake until sides are set up - the middle will look kind of wet and crackled - about 35 minutes.
