SugarSlam 2011 is here! Thanks to our judges and our sponsors for helping me to rally some excitement around the contest – and now it’s time for the rules and regulations! Check out the info below, and leave comments with any additional questions!
Want to spread the word about SugarSlam 2011? Email your favorite blogger and/or newspaper writer and tell them to get in touch with me! Download & print my 11″x17″ poster here and plaster it all over your town! (If you can print it at home or work, awesome – otherwise it costs just under $2 to print at Kinkos.) Send me a picture of your efforts and I’ll send you some Bake and Destroy stickers. Oh, and buy the original high-quality prints without all my advertising junk on it from Betty Turbo!
Deadlines & Whatnot
- Contest Starts: Now!
- Contest Ends: Monday, July 11 2011 – No entries will be accepted after this date!
- Submit as many entries as you want.
- International entries are eligible, however some prizes my change depending on where you live. With the exception of one prize, all of the prizes can and will be shipped to the winner.
Baking Guidelines
- This contest is open to ALL baked goods – cookies, cakes, brownies, muffins, bread… sweet, savory – I don’t care. If you bake it, it counts.
- You must bake and decorate your own entry. Your friends and family are welcome to help, but you can’t hire or commission someone else to do it for you.
- Entries do not have to be “from scratch.” Boxed mixes and canned frostings are fine.
- Entries must be wrestling-themed, but this is NOT a decorating contest. One of my favorite entries from 2008 was completely undecorated Bad News Brownies. Judging will be just as much about creativity as appearance, so don’t worry if you’re not a decorator.
- Be original. Please take a look at the entries from 2008 and don’t repeat anyone else’s idea.
- Your entry must be edible. Non-edible supports are allowed, but be reasonable.
How to Enter
- To enter, send no more than 5 photos of your finished baked good to SugarSlam2011@gmail.com along with a title and short description of the entry. The description is especially important for those of you who decide not to go literal with your entry. Please keep the photos to a reasonable size.
- Although it’s not at all necessary – you are TOTALLY welcome to make a WWE-style promo video talking about why your entry is going to win and the others suck.
- Be nice. While I’m down for silliness and gore, there will be kids looking at these photos. No nudity, no cussing and nothing else that will make Beth smack you. (All entries are subject to approval.)
- Entering this contest gives me the right to reproduce and use your images throughout my site and on promotional materials, etc., as I see fit without compensation. Please note that I may use your photos even if you do not win. I will always try to credit your photos, but if you anticipate whining about this, don’t enter.
- I have the right to reject any entry for any reason, although I don’t see why I would as long as you follow the rules.
How to Win
There are two titles up for grabs: SugarSlam 2011 Champion and People’s Choice. Our panel of judges will choose the Champ: Mike Edison, Ben Roche and Beth Phoenix. To be fair to any of my “real-life” friends who are entering, I will not be judging. The readers of Bake and Destroy will choose the People’s Choice winner.
Judges will be looking for creativity first and foremost. As I mentioned, this is not a decorating contest, although awesomely decorated cakes, cookies and cupcakes are certainly welcome and encouraged. 2008’s winner won with a modestly decorated, CM Punk-inspired Pepsi-infused cupcake without frosting because, as a wrestling fan, she knew CM Punk loves Pepsi and hates frosting. The idea was clever and the photo was good. That being said, if you can make a cake that looks just like Ric Flair I’m pretty sure you might win. I’m keeping this loose because I want anyone who loves wrestling and baking to enter and have a fair shot at winning.
Bake and Destroy readers will choose the People’s Choice winner. This is an unruly bunch of misfits who do whatever they feel like. My only advice for winning them over is to make something really awesome and don’t show them any weakness.

Hello, I was just wondering how are you going to taste the sweet goodness in all these baked goods?
Hi Becca- The judges will not be tasting the entries – entries will be judged on the photos and descriptions only. For a similiarly-run contest, check out Threadcakes.com
Question from someone on Twitter: If you win People’s Choice and are not in IL, can you gift the Horrorbles prize to someone local?
Answer: We’ll have to work that out with Horrorbles if and when that happens.
Yippie!!! It’s time to design!!! Whaoo!!!
This is fantastic! I already have a few ideas:D
Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness!
Can you have more than one entry?
Enter as many times as you like!
Hi
will come back to enter
Do frozen desserts count?
That’s a good question. I’m going to say no, not for this contest. If it were a dessert competition, yes. But being that it’s a bake off I’m going to say something about the entry must be baked. Of course you could bake something and freeze it, or add it to something frozen – or serve something frozen with a baked component.
OBVIOUSLY no Stone Cold Steve Austin tribute would be complete without a frozen component of some kind 🙂
i am SO NOT getting out of the kitchen till July, am i?
Donuts wouldn’t count? Can one *bake* a donut? I have so many ideeeeeas! I will be consulting our VHS/DVD collection and brainstorming… boyfriend and I will both be entering separately!
OH! There’s a Food Network Cake challenge with wrestling themed cakes on right now? Inspiration time.
I bake my doughnuts, but I’m going to say yes to all doughnuts, baked or fried.
humm.. I’m thinking of entering 🙂 Nervous But I just might
Fantastic submit. I was checking constantly this website and I am impressed! Highly helpful info exclusively the last part I care for like information very much. I was searching for this particular data to get a prolonged time. Thank you and good luck.
Hello,
Is there an age for how young you have to be to compete?
OCB
All ages are welcome!
One more question, I can’t make ice cream can I?
If there is a baked componant to your entry then yes, you can make ice cream. But something in your entry must be baked.
So excited to get my entry in! For the description, does it need to include the recipe? Also, can it be attached as a Word document, or is pasting it into an email fine?
You don’t have to include the recipe unless that’s a crucial part of your story. An attachment or in the body of the email is fine!
how do we know if our entry was received? will you reply to the email?
I will email you – forgive me if it takes a few days!
